2009 Montreal Canadiens Stamp
brcStamps

Montreal Canadiens Centennial stamps were issued on Oct 9, 2009. They are the most storied sports team in Canadian history having won 24 Stanley Cups, more than any other team.

A domestic-rate PERMANENT™ stamp featuring a close-up of Maurice “Rocket” Richard’s game-worn #9 hockey sweater, plus three high-value stamps featuring actual footage of the historic 500th goals of Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Jean Beliveau and Guy Lafleur were place on sale at post offices across Canada.

Montreal canadiens Stamp

The Montreal Canadiens souvenir sheet is tough to scan! Here is the best I could do. Click on it for an enlargement.

The 3 x $3 souvenir sheet was printed using an action-oriented printing process, called Motionstamp™ technology. When moved up and down, the actual sweep of action can be seen as in the original movie clips. This is the first time this technology has been used on Canadian stamps but similar technology has been use on recent stamps of New Zealand, Australia, Finland and Austria, among others.

While these stamps are a marvel of modern printing technology, a similar printing technology, known as lenticular printing, has been used on stamps since the early 1960's. This type of printing gave the stamps a 3-dimensional (3d) look. However, back then, these stamps were spurned by traditional collectors and produced mainly for thematic collectors by such countries as Bhutan and Umm Al Qiwain. They did very little postal duty.

Traditional philately has changed considerably since then, and most once conservative stamp issuing countries, such as Canada, now produce stamps that would have been out-right rejected by serious collectors back then.

It remains to be seen how many of these Montreal Canadiens stamps will be used, and even if a clear cancellation will adhere to the surface. Fine used examples may be scarce to find.
