Landscapes: 1972-77 |
|
The Landscapes definitive series debuted with the large
sized $1 and $2 values in early 1972. An oddity is that the attractive
pair were initially produced by both the British American Bank Note
Company (steel engraving) and Ashton-Potter Limited (lithographic
portion). Later reprints of the $1 were printed solely by BAB. The five
medium values were released towards the end of summer in the same year.
Some of the initial printings of all values from plate 1 were produced
with the migratory OP4 Ottawa tagging. This was short-lived, and all
subsequent reprints were done with the more stable OP2 type.

| Notes and Identification Characteristics. See
Abbreviations for Tagging, Paper, Printer and
Format types. |
- The OP4 tagging has disappeared entirely on some stamps that bore
it, leaving the impression that they are untagged. Some examples may
have only traces of the tagging, which tends to migrate all over the
stamps and even onto album pages. The beige colour on the 50c value
sometimes absorbs the OP4 tagging, giving the appearance of fluorescent
ink.
- The ribbed paper on the Landscapes is not nearly as pronounced as
that of the Caricatures. It is more of a textured effect on the front,
usually vertical, and can be seen by holding the stamp at a slight angle
to normal light.
- The 10c Type 1 has distinct cross hatching to the left of Canada,
while Type 2 appears to be more solidly inked.
- The 15c Type 1 has very little or none of the dark blue photogravure
colour in the mountains, while Type 2 has heavy colour in this location.
- The 25c Type 2 has heavier shading in the polar bears' shadows than
Type 1. It was applied with a second photogravure plate in dark blue, in
addition to the dark blue steel engraving. Type 1 was printed with only
one photogravure plate, light blue, in addition to the steel engraving.
- The 50c Type 1 has very little blue shading in the rough water near
the cliff, while Type 2 is considerably heavier.
- All Type 1 stamps have 3mm tagging, while Type 2 have 4mm tagging.
- The 20c has only one printing type, but exists with both tagging
widths.
- Plate 2 inscriptions do not exist for the 20c and 25c values
- Some varieties were printed only with blank (field) corner blocks.
These are marked with the word "blank", followed by the plate number of
the type the stamps are similar to, and probably came from.
- The Type 1 $1.00 stamps were printed with lithography and steel
engraving, the Type 2 with photogravure and steel engraving. The colours
are quite distinct in the two printings.
