Identification Characteristics. See Abbreviations for Tagging, Paper, Printer and Format types.
  1. The original Ashton-Potter printings of all values are identified by smooth, solid background colors. This is especially noticeable on the 1c, 3c and 10c values. The Abitibi-Price paper is also slightly creamy in color.
  2. The Ashton-Potter reprints of 1986 have the same color characteristics of the originals, but the Rolland paper used is bright white, and is easily noticed even on single stamps. The 20c is considerably paler in color than the original, while the 1c appears darker.
  3. The CBN printings have rougher background colors, speckled with white spots. This is less pronounced on the 2c and 5c, but can be seen with a magnifying glass. The different perforation gauge is the most obvious characteristic.
  4. The CBN printings on Harrison paper are slightly whiter on front than those on Clarke paper (but not as bright as the Ashton Rolland printings); the gum on the reverse displays the usual greenish tint, versus the cream tint for Clarke paper.
  5. Although unseen to the naked eye, there are some very interesting ultraviolet characteristics on some stamps in this set. A unknown number of the 20c Ashton printing on Abitibi paper (HL-06) appears to have the grey-brown background printed with fluorescent ink. This glows yellow under the UV lamp (the same applies for the 64c medium value stove - see medium listing). The entire stock of the 3c CBN printing (HL-03c) was done with fluorescent ink, which glows pink under the lamp. The two Ashton printings are not known with this ink.
