Caricatures: 1973-77

This low value series was perhaps the most controversial of all Canadian definitive issues. Not only was the reigning monarch replaced on all but the first-class issues, but many felt that the simplistic single-colour steel engraved caricature designs did not do justice to the Prime Ministers and to Queen Elizabeth II. Perhaps this led to the short lifespan of less than four years. This of course did not deter collectors. There were enough distinguishable printing varieties to satisfy them, though not to the magnitude of the Centennial Definitives of 1967.

Notes and Identification Characteristics. See Abbreviations for Tagging, Paper, Printer and Format types.
  1. All CBN printings are on paper that is textured on the reverse, usually with an embossing effect of the engraved "Canada" and the value showing through. The tagging is quite visible, an ugly yellow in color.
  2. All BABN printings are on paper that is smooth on the reverse, without with the embossing effect of the CBN printings. The tagging is barely visible, with the exception of some of the 8c printings.
  3. The 1c, 2c and 6c BABN printings from the booklets have weaker impressions than the sheet stamps, giving the appearance of a lighter shades.
  4. The ribbed paper consists of a horizontal textured effect, and can be easily seen when the stamp is held up to normal light at a slight angle. Ribbed paper is known from plate 1 on the 1c and 4c, and plate 2 on the 6c and 8c stamps.
  5. The 8c on cream paper is quite distinct from the other papers, and has light yellow tagging, unusual for the BABN printings in this series. It is known only from Plate 5.
  6. Plate numbers used: 1c, 3c, 4c, 5c (plate 1 only); 2c, 7c, 10c (plates 1 & 2); 6c (plates 1, 2, & 3); 8c (plates 1 through 8).
  7. The coil stamps exist completely imperofated, while other sheet stamps exist partly imperforated
  8. The 1c and 6c exist printed on the gummed side
  9. ink to Caricatures (1973-77), Robin Harris, Adminware Corp.
  10. ink to Landscapes and Caricatures Checklist, Jean Lafontaine
